Why You'll Love These Donut Cookies

You'll love these because they're like getting the best of both worlds: the comfort of homemade cookies and the fun of donuts. The softness of the cookie combined with the smooth, chocolatey ganache makes each bite a treat. Plus, making them is a breeze, and they're perfect for sharing or enjoying solo with your morning coffee. They're not just easy to make; they also make fantastic gifts. They're just the kind of homemade treat that brightens any day!

Ingredients In My Chocolate Chip Donut Cookies Recipe

    For the Cookie Donuts:

    • White Sugar: Adds sweetness and helps with the browning and texture of the donuts.
    • Brown Sugar: Provides a rich, molasses-like flavor and contributes to the moisture and color of the donuts.
    • Large Egg: Acts as a binder, providing structure and richness to the donuts.
    • Vanilla Extract: Adds a classic, sweet aroma and flavor, enhancing the overall taste of the donuts.
    • Unsalted Butter: Adds richness, flavor, and tender texture to the donuts. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the amount of salt in the recipe.
    • All-Purpose Flour: The main structure of the donuts, it provides the necessary gluten to hold the other ingredients together.
    • Baking Powder: A leavening agent that helps the donuts rise and become light and fluffy.
    • Chocolate Chips: Adds sweet, chocolatey bursts in every bite of the donut.

    For the Chocolate Glaze:

    • Chocolate (Dark, Milk or White): Forms the base of the ganache glaze, adding a rich, creamy, and chocolatey coating to the donuts.
    • Cream: When mixed with chocolate, it creates a smooth, rich ganache glaze.
    • White Chocolate: Used for drizzling over the glazed donuts for an attractive finish and an added layer of sweet flavor.

How To Make My Chocolate Chip Donut Cookies

    Prepare for Baking:

Start by greasing your donut pans and preheating the oven. This ensures that your donuts will release easily from the pans after baking and that the oven is at the right temperature when you're ready to bake.

    Combine Wet Ingredients:

In a bowl, mix together the sugars, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter. This mixture forms the base of your donuts, providing moisture, sweetness, and flavor.

    Sift and Mix Dry Ingredients:

Sift the flour and baking powder into the wet ingredients. This not only helps to remove any lumps in the flour but also ensures that the baking powder is evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Then, mix until just combined to keep the texture of the donuts light and soft.

    Add Chocolate Chips:

Stir in the chocolate chips, which will melt slightly as the donuts bake, creating gooey chocolate pockets in every bite.

    Bake the Donuts:

Carefully fill the greased donut pans with the batter and bake until they're lightly golden. This will take just enough time to cook them through without drying them out.

    Cool Down:

Allow the donuts to cool in the pans for a bit before transferring them to a wire rack. This makes it easier to handle the donuts and ensures they don't break apart when you're removing them from the pans.

    Make the Ganache Glaze:

Prepare the chocolate ganache glaze by melting chocolate and cream together. This creates a rich, smooth topping for your donuts.

    Glaze the Donuts:

Dip the cooled donuts into the ganache, letting any excess drip off for a neat finish. The ganache adds a luxurious, chocolatey layer to your donuts.

    Add Final Touches:

Drizzle melted white chocolate over the glazed donuts for an extra touch of sweetness and an eye-catching appearance.

Throughout these steps, the focus is on creating a balance of flavors and textures, from the soft, sweet dough to the rich, creamy ganache, resulting in a treat that's both delicious and visually appealing.

    My Top Tip

The most important tip for this recipe is to not overmix the batter. When you combine your wet and dry ingredients, just mix until they're incorporated. Overmixing can lead to your donuts becoming tough and dense. You want them to be soft and tender, so gentle and just enough stirring is key. Keep an eye on that, and you're on your way to making some amazing Chocolate Chip Cookie Donuts!

    Variations

Nutty Delight: Add chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds to the batter for a crunchy texture and nutty flavor.

Double Chocolate: Mix in some cocoa powder with the flour to make the dough chocolaty, creating a double chocolate experience with the chocolate chips.

Spice it Up: Add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice to the batter for a warm, spicy twist.

Coffee Infusion: Add a small amount of instant coffee or espresso powder to the batter for a subtle coffee flavor that pairs wonderfully with chocolate.

Berry Blast: Add freeze-dried raspberries or strawberries to the batter for a fruity and slightly tart contrast to the sweet chocolate.

Salted Caramel: Drizzle salted caramel over the glazed donuts and sprinkle with a little sea salt for a sweet and salty treat.

White Chocolate Dream: Use white chocolate chips in the batter and a white chocolate ganache for a creamy, dreamy version.

Gluten-Free Option: Substitute the all-purpose flour with your favorite gluten-free flour blend to cater to those with gluten sensitivities.

    Common Questions

How do I store the leftover donuts, and how long will they last?

Store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They're best enjoyed within 2 days. For longer storage, you can refrigerate them for up to a week, but make sure to bring them to room temperature before serving for the best texture.

    Can I freeze these donuts?

Yes, you can freeze them without the glaze for up to 2 months. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer bag. When you're ready to enjoy, thaw them at room temperature and then add the glaze.

Can I use a different type of chocolate for the glaze or in the batter?

Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with dark, milk, or white chocolate based on your preference. Each type of chocolate will give the glaze and the donuts a unique flavor profile.

How can I incorporate nuts into this recipe?

Nuts can add a lovely crunch and flavor to your donuts. Simply chop your favorite nuts—like almonds, walnuts, or pecans—and fold them into the batter along with the chocolate chips. You can also sprinkle some chopped nuts on top of the glaze for extra texture.

    INGREDIENTS

    Cookie Donuts
    • ½ cup (½ cup) white sugar
    • ¼ cup (¼ cup) brown sugar
    • 1 (1) egg large
    • 1 teaspoon (1 teaspoon) vanilla extract
    • 115 g (½ cups) butter unsalted, melted
    • 1 cup (1 cup) all-purpose flour
    • ¼ teaspoon (¼ teaspoon) baking powder
    • ½ cup (½ cup) chocolate chips
    Ganache Glaze
    • 1 cup (1 cup) dark chocolate or milk, or white chocolate
    • ¾ cup (¾ cup) heavy cream
    Garnish
    • 1 tablespoon (1 tablespoon) white chocolate melted

    INSTRUCTIONS

    Cookie Donuts
    • Grease two regular donut pans. Preheat your oven to 356°F (180°C).
    • In a large bowl, combine white sugar, brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Use a hand mixer to blend until the mixture is fully combined and smooth.
    • Place a mesh strainer over the bowl containing the wet ingredients. Add the all-purpose flour and baking powder to the strainer. Sift these dry ingredients directly into the wet mixture.
    • Gently mix the ingredients with a silicone spatula until the flour is fully incorporated and no dry spots remain. The batter will be runnier than typical cookie dough—this is normal for this recipe. Fold in the chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
    • Transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe it into the greased donut pan, filling each donut cavity about ¾ full.
    • Place the donut pans in the preheated oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the donuts are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • After baking, place the pans on a wire rack and let the cookie donuts cool completely before removing them from the pans.
    Chocolate Ganache Glaze
    • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate and cream. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
    • Pour the ganache into a shallow bowl for easy dipping.
    • Hold each cookie donut upside down and dip the top into the chocolate ganache. Allow any excess glaze to drip off, then place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to let the glaze set.
    Garnish
    • Melt the white chocolate and use a fork or piping bag to drizzle it over the glazed donuts for an attractive finish.

    NOTES

Smooth Glaze: If the ganache is too thick, gently heat it to achieve a smooth, dippable consistency.
Storage: Store any leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
